The first astrophotography rig compatibility checklist

An imaging rig is a system. A strong component can still be the wrong purchase when its weight, connections, backfocus or power needs conflict with everything around it.

Start with the mount

Treat the mount as the system’s practical load and tracking constraint. Do not build a plan from the telescope’s headline aperture alone. List the imaging telescope, rings, dovetail, camera, filter equipment, guide system, focus motor and cabling as one working payload.

Manufacturer payload figures are a starting point, not a universal imaging guarantee. Wind exposure, focal length, balance and mechanical stiffness also matter.

Record the optical chain

Write the intended order of every threaded and optical component. Record:

• connection type and thread gender;
• clear aperture;
• optical thickness;
• required sensor spacing;
• whether an adapter consumes part of that spacing.

Backfocus is an optical distance, not simply the sum of the advertised body widths. Verify where each manufacturer measures from.

Check image scale deliberately

Focal length and pixel size determine image scale. The right range depends on typical seeing, tracking performance and the targets you want to frame. A smaller number is not automatically better: it can demand more of the mount and atmosphere without revealing more real detail.

Make power a bill of materials

List the voltage, connector, polarity and peak current for each powered device. Include dew heaters and a cold-weather margin. Avoid relying on a power supply whose headline rating leaves no capacity for simultaneous peaks.

Confirm control compatibility

Before purchase, confirm operating-system support, current drivers, physical ports and whether the chosen capture application supports every device. “USB” only describes part of the connection story.

Separate UK and EU fulfilment

The pre-purchase record

Save one page containing the final payload estimate, optical train diagram, spacing calculation, image scale, field of view, power budget, cable list and seller region. If any row is unknown, the rig is not ready to order.
